Happy Sunday. Today, I am sending you two new recipes and some of my favorite comfort meals from the archives to inspire your menu for the week.
Weekend Update
This weekend has flown by! Fortunately, I only have to work tomorrow, and then I’m off for the week. Woohoo!
Today, I did a Pilates flow on the Cadillac with . If you want to learn about Pilates, I recommend subscribing to her Substack!
I’ve been exploring my Pilates practice for the past year and found it to be one of the most rewarding things I’ve pursued for myself. Today was a little challenging because my mind-body connection was totally out of whack. The synchronization and deep connection between my brain and my movement is one of the reasons why I love Pilates so much, but today, it just was not there. Ania was patient but still challenged me to try a new move…hanging! I’ve never done vertical hanging like this before, and I loved feeling like a little sleeping bat!
Yesterday, I finally made my way to Gute Leute, the omakase coffee experience I mentioned in my last newsletter. It was so much fun, though I discovered that drinking five espressos in one sitting is the upper limit of my caffeine tolerance. My favorite drink of the experience is the one I’m posing with in the photo. It was made with vin chaud, smoked pine cone essence, and a charred cinnamon stick. The vin chaud was mixed with the espresso, and it made for an unexpectedly refreshing yet warm drink; it was perfect for a warm autumn day!
I also really loved the Gute Nut Spanner, the fourth image in the gallery. It had cocoa, thyme, and crushed nuts on top. Delicious! The drink with the caramel running down the sides was good, though a little decadent for my preferences. It was topped with a Korean chestnut, which I loved.
My least favorite drink was the one with lemons. It combined espresso, lemon sorbet, and rose essence. It was interesting to try, and the assembly was beautiful, but it was my least favorite combination on the menu. Everything else was exceptional, inspiring me to bring new flavors to my cooking. I’m excited to dive into the fall fruits and vegetables and ideate new recipes for you over the coming weeks.
All in all, I strongly recommend giving Gute Leute a try if you’re in the DMV area and looking for a unique coffee experience. They also change the menu seasonally, so I’ll be excited to learn what they offer for winter!
Okay, I’m sure you’re ready for me to stop yapping and get to the recipes. I have two new recipes and my favorite comfort meals because it’s rainy and icky outside! Let’s dig in.
New Recipes
Trout Amandine
This recipe received great reviews as it went through my program, so I’m excited to share it with you. It’s one of my favorite fish recipes and is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner.
Butternut Squash Rice Pilaf
I served my trout amandine with this butternut squash rice pilaf, though this pilaf would pair beautifully with your favorite protein like London broil or roasted chicken instead.
Comfort Meals for Fall
Meatball Soup with Pasta
This meatball soup with pasta recipe is extra comforting and perfect for a chilly night.
Chicken and Kohlrabi Soup
This chicken and kohlrabi soup is an easy, comforting chicken soup recipe with just the right amount of peppery undertones from kohlrabi.
Cheesy Sausage Pasta Bake
When the temperatures drop, sometimes the only thing that satisfies you is a big bowl of cheesy pasta!
Mushroom and Chickpea Stroganoff
This mushroom and chickpea stroganoff is a creamy, mustardy vegetarian stroganoff that is a lovely homage to the classic beef stroganoff recipe.
Beef Barley Stew
This beef barley stew recipe epitomizes comfort. It’s a thick, velvety, stick-to-your-ribs stew that may–and I mean this in the best way possible–send you straight to Snoozeville after you eat it.
I think that’s about it for today! I am working on new recipes shown above that I will send through the Tasters program. The first is a honey-harissa slow cooker chicken, and the second is butternut squash pearl couscous with whipped feta. Both are outstanding, and I can’t wait to see how people enjoy trying them.
